Scholars created a digital twin of the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office (MCCO) and Miami Valley Regional Crime Lab (MVRCL), a Forensic Laboratory serving law enforcement agencies in the Miami Valley, Ohio region by analyzing submitted evidence.
Summary
MCCO/MVRCL is one of the few crime lab and coroner’s office in the area, but it is not conducive to tours. The Scholars created a digital twin that allows the public to experience the facility without risking evidence confidentiality and disrupting work hours. This project will inform the general public about the crime lab and coroner’s office and stimulate interest in forensics.

Outcomes and Additional Information
The goal of the project is to provide a tour through both facilities where users can do tasks that each lab has to perform themselves. In the digital twin, users will be able to choose which labs they want to explore and which activities in those labs they want to try. The program teaches users how to do each task step-by-step.
The MCCO/MVRCL facilities include several areas, including Coroner Office/Autopsy, Toxicology, Drug & Chemistry, Latent Prints, Firearms, and Histology/Pathology. More information can be found in the PDF slides.
The created digital twin includes the Latent Print and Firearms Labs. Items in the labs were created in Blender, generated using Polycam scans, or retrieved on the Unreal Engine Fab marketplace.
The application allows users to navigate the spaces and choose tasks and activities to explore.
Future work will include additional labs and facilities and creating a virtual reality mode with additional interactions.
